That I need to be still (quiet) and listen to him. He already knows my hearts desires, my aches and pains so now I just need to slow down and spend time listening to his words of advice.

This week as I have looked at Psalm 119 I have been humbled by the commitment the author had regarding the law of the Lord. Often when I think of laws I am again thrust back to the legalistic view of the “don’ts.” I want to be a rule follower, but “the law” is so much more than that. As I’ve read, I have been reminded that if I had followed the law, I could have avoided some of my pitfalls, my sins, my regrets. If I had been more faithful in meditating on the law, I could have avoided worry and even some of my fears. The bottom line is that the law was written to help not to hinder, to protect not to defeat and destroy. Another amazing thought that touched me the other morning as I was attempting to listen, was the fact that the law or the word takes on a whole new meaning on this side of the cross. There is a new covenant, a new law --- the Law or the Word that became flesh, dwelt among man and took my sin to the cross. How can I not love that “Law” that “Word” more than silver or gold? That word is certainly a lamp for my feet and a light to my path.

For a major portion of my life I have read my Bible and participated in Sunday School, small groups and Bible studies. I have been moved by the insight of others who have shared their thoughts with me. I have been encouraged by the spiritual walk of those who are more mature. I have watched and I have learned that what I admired came from a commitment to reading, studying, and following the Word. I began a daily quiet time out of discipline because I knew it was beneficial, but I have continued the quiet time because it is meaningful and enriches my soul. I would encourage those who ask to see God as a living being longing to con

One insight that I have gained from listening to God through His word is that God’s Word, the Law, preserve me. They are the walls of stone that God builds around me to protect me and keep life from crumbling in on me. The more time I spend in God’s Word, learning from God, that strong that protection becomes.

The thing I’ve learned about listening to God through His Word is that God seldom talks to me about the issues I want to talk about. When I calm my mind and allow God to pick the agenda by methodically reading the Bible, God consistently speak into the most relevant issues of my life. It is always a source of comfort for me.

I would encourage them to not be bound by “x” number of verses or chapters, but to start with one of the gospels or the Psalms and to meditate on a few verses at a time and let God speak. Life will always get in the way, but somehow we always make time for those things that we feel are important. This is one of those things!
